| GemStar Ranch Herding Lesson Information Lesson Location- GemStar Ranch in Leona Valley. Leona Valley is in North LA county, just west of Palmdale, and North of Santa Clarita. Directions and releases will be emailed when you book your lesson. Facility: Livestock: both hair and wool sheep, also goats. Large arena (AKC and ASCA size) and round pen for starting dogs. 3 acre fenced field. Large open fields for advanced dogs. AKC “B” course, or for USBCHA trial work. 800 yard + in gently rolling terrain. NOTE- in fairness to the livestock- I only work with herding dogs- for instance, I will not put a Golden Retriever Lab, Malamute, Cocker Spaniel, Pit Bull, Bull Mastiff, Shiba Inu, Bassett Hound, etc in to "see if they herd". f you do not know if your dog qualifies- please ask! There are many unusual herding breeds! Lesson and Instinct Test Times: Arenas (lesson times vary depending on the time of year) Tuesday 8 AM-noon Afternoon: 4 PM Thursday- 8 AM- noon Saturday Afternoon: 4 PM Sunday 8 AM – noon Field Lessons: Sunday and Thursday afternoons (other times are available) Field ready advanced dogs: Please bring your own water, bowl, and tie out. You may wish to bring a chair. RATES: Group Lessons and Instinct Testing: Lessons are $40.00 and instinct test: $45.00. Each dog will work twice, OR one long session, depending on what is best for the dog. If you do not want to work your own dog, and wish for me to work him/her the rate is $45. You will be alternating working dogs with other dog/handler team(s), Dog’s (and their humans!) learn best in short successful training sessions. I encourage you to watch the other dog handler teams, and learn from them. Please ask questions! It helps everyone learn. Please stay and watch other lessons on your lesson day when you are finished. To spectate on other days there will be a 25.00 auditing fee. I try to put 2 dogs in between every dog that works, so your dog can get a rest. Please sign in on whiteboard so everyone knows when it’s their “turn”. Please contact me, with cancellations at least 24 hours in advance. Please leave message, or email. (Email is preferred). Lessons are by prior arrangement, so we are not overbooked. Private Lessons are also available. Rates are $60.00, or $65.00 if you do not wish to work your dog. Times are flexible, and can be arranged to fit your schedule. Practices: Practice is available for students advanced enough to work their own dog. Contact me.
